"Venus in Furs" is a song by The Velvet Underground, written by Lou Reed and originally released on the 1967 album The Velvet Underground & Nico. Inspired by the book of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the song includes sexual themes of sadomasochism, bondage and submission.
The S&M industry that flourished in NYC in the 1980's, funded by S&L/wall street money and the real estate and general economic bubble, had grown so large by the early nineties that at least half a dozen of our friends (and even a band member) were working in "dungeons" and an illtet side project called illness headlined NYC's Black and Blue Ball, where younger artists were able to get paid well to express our creative sexual explorations amongst the older, wealthy finance-types who footed the bill.
Of course John Cale is considered a pioneer (if not the godfather) of underground rock violin, and Venus in Furs also explores elements of the eastern-european and gypsy tonalities, which exude the same raw urgency, passion and tone-bending that attracted us to funk, hip-hop and the blues. So Venus in Furs was a natural choice for one of the first "cover songs" this group would perform.
