about

With a definite Chicago industrial music (Wax Trax/Ministry) influence, the main rhythm on Squat uses a sample of a record player stopping assembled in a rhythmic pattern popularized by the dancehall of the time.

The gun shot as a musical device was probably inspired by hip-hop and the lyrics made reference to the political movement that was happening in the Lower East Side in the 1980s, advocating violent revolution and an anarchistic approach to property - "property is theft" - that was represented by the squatters movement in which abandoned and largely bank or developer-owned buildings were re-claimed by activists who took up residence and renovated the buildings, sometimes resisting the police who came to "brick them up" with doors booby-trapped with piss buckets and thrown bricks.

The struggles and aspirations of the squatter community is well-documented in Seth Tobocman's book, You Don't Have to Fuck People over to Survive.

Guitar riffs for Squat were written by Patrick Taps Guden, originally for an Arrogant Response song called Spoon.
